PLEASE NOTE: Performances for Prison for Objects will take place throughout the day during the Glasgow International festival.
Wednesday - Sunday, 12 - 5pm, 16 - 26 April 2008 at 48 King Street (4th Floor, over the street from our main gallery).
Performances last approximately 20 minutes.
Transmission Gallery is pleased to present new work by London based artist Melanie Gilligan. Gilligan’s work includes performance, writing and object-making, often lying somewhere between fiction, artwork and polemic. In addition, her regular writing for magazines has a prominent role in what she produces overall.
Prison for Objects will involve an installation and a continuous series of performances in the gallery. On display are images of objects from the Renaissance to the 18th century, which depict their contents as both intensely abstract and material all at once. These connect with the performances to dramatize a hypothetical representational history.
Throughout the exhibition there will be the following events:

Melanie Gilligan completed the Whitney Independent Study Programme in New York in 2005, and has exhibited as part of the Art Now live series at Tate Britain, at Serpentine Gallery and Lisson Gallery in London, Greene Naftali Gallery, Orchard Gallery and, Columbia University in New York and the Via Farrini Gallery in Milan. She is a regular contributor to Mute Magazine, ArtForum, Texte zur Kunste.
Daniel Berchenko is a writer living in New York. Karin Schneider is an artist and lives and work in New York. Mattin is a sound artist working with noise and improvisation based in Berlin.
