Fundamentally grounded in Gothic literature, my practice occupies the territory where its falsified, deliberate archaism converges with the generic markers of the standardised Gothic in contemporary culture.
Referencing this shared preoccupation with artifice and appropriation, the blatant pretense of photocopies, cut outs and synthetic materials, more fake than real behave like these standard clichés in totally failing to represent the magnitude of their original.
Simultaneous references to outward displays of an inward intimate disruption (demonstrative ecclesiastical architecture, Masonic and heraldic banners) collapse historical as well as ontological frameworks. The Carpathian mountains, castles, arches, heroines, villains and velvet are the standards of such an ultimate Gothic experience, a moment of otherness. As cultural and historical appropriation distorts time and scale between reality and unreality, so too is logic and orientation subverted.
Working in maquettes alongside a program of research in the studio, my practice in real scale integrates sound, surface and lighting with these standards to construct a contrived, pseudo Gothic landscape intended to facilitate and examine the paradoxical pursuit of an intimate disruption through the universal language of Gothic.
