My creative output leaps and swings between idea(l)s of melancholic romance, human/artistic striving and exuberant optimism, translated into works alternating between works of time-consuming repetitive endeavour and light-hearted immediate gestures. I have steadily worked through artistic mediums over the four years since graduating from The Glasgow School of Art, developing a practice that pokes into painting, performance, video and text, yet is based upon sculpture and installation.
My recurring interests in physical/mental exploration and the performative aspect of making were recently realised in a 3-month collaborative project over summer 2008 with fellow Glasgow-based artist Alex Gross. This self-initiated project, funded by the Scottish Arts Council and the British Council, saw us take a 9000-mile road trip around the western United States, punctuated by three solo exhibitions on-route.
Essentially a 3-month performance, it was a literal exploration of human endeavour and failure, modernism and hippy culture, and a jovial examination of the role of the artist/individual in relation to humanities monumental hopes and ideals. The project was concluded in December 2008 with an exhibition at the Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, as a New Work Scotland Project award winner.
Since returning to my individual practice in January 2009 I have shown new work in two solo exhibitions in London, and a major solo exhibition in a 9500 square foot shop unit in Glasgow's Princes Square. This exhibition brought together a diverse range of work including giant woollen tie-dye patterned pom-pom sculptures, action painting and video, with an accompanying short story.
I am currently researching and producing new work for upcoming exhibitions in Copenhagen, Moscow and for Glasgow International 2010. This work, while still in development, has been marked by an interest in the death/void of meaning exemplified by abstract sculpture, the awkward relationship between the artistic gesture and it's art-historical context, and animal husbandry.
