My paintings are primarily an exploration of light and atmosphere in relation to the abstraction of landscape. They are produced as responses to particular places, to memories of places, and are frequently about how we remember or see a place. Temporality is a recurring theme within my work.
The material I work from will link to an idea I have in relation to the landscape. It can comprise of a feeling (like warmth or lightness), a time, place, colour, or pattern. As part of a visual language these implications within the paintings act as associations in order to communicate a way of seeing, or looking.
My work maintains a strong interest in the gestural mark and in the materiality of paint; its texture, luminosity, and plasticity. I am interested in the evocative nature of these qualities, and in the relationships between colour and atmosphere. Frequently my work explores feelings of nostalgia.
Often the paintings are describing physical space. A great deal of my focus is increasingly upon pictorial space. In a large amount of my work the ambiguity of the shapes within the pictorial space allows for multiple and contradictory readings of possible spaces within the pieces.
