KERR, JANETTE

Brightness drenching through oil on canvas 17.75"x18.25"

I paint with half an eye on what is around me, but also simply by responding to an energy within me, an energy generated by what I feel, or smell, or taste, or actually imagine is around me when I am working outside, so my paintings are responses to something sensed or felt about a very particular place. Sometimes that feeling is taken to extremes. These paintings have been created in extreme conditions; they are far beyond mere topography, neutral reports of a place, they embody my responses to the elemental; echoing my immediate responses to the sound and silence, the observations of movement and rhythms of sea and wind, to changing light - advancing rain and mist, glancing sunlight, swelling and breaking waves, the merging of spray with air. I am interested in something less fixed, something more intangible, relishing sudden and unpredictable changes in the weather; I am a foul- weather painter - a painter not ‘of‘ or ‘about‘ the landscape, but in it.
