Like an exercise in archival cataloguing source material is borrowed both arbitrarily and intentionally from second hand books, catalogues, photographs and the internet to form a diverse and complex visual language; from there the compilation of subjects go under examination for re-invention and re-sampling to form the initial foundations for the work.

Thumbing though the images, acts as a starting point, like personal referencing for broader ideas. Humble as this act may be, it allows the work and ideas to move fluidly from one piece to the next. Thus each singular work demonstrates a careful sorting of a broader totality, acting as one within an endless field of formal, theoretical, and subjective possibilities.

The filtering of images predominantly from the lexicon of Architecture, Nature and foreign landscapes, reveals recurring themes of ritualistic tendencies and cultural motifs. For example the rock arrangements in Japanese gardens symbolises not only an ancient tradition but also represents something altogether more spiritual, intrinsically bound with philosophical ideas, drawn from classical Chinese beliefs. Stone paths, once taken in to consideration, are as much an expression of traditional aesthetics as is the interior of an ancient shrine, or a colour block print. Thus, man’s interference with nature becomes tied up within a complex value system and cultural status.

Through the restaging of this imagery the everyday and the profound become entwined, suggesting a slippage between reality and imagination. Familiar subjects no longer appear as they seem and the mundane and inanimate are forcibly abstracted through the use of paint. Within the presentation of a somewhat altered scheme of nature, conventional distinctions between ‘natural’ and ‘man-made’ are disrupted.

Moving among media, from painting on linen to paper and clay, subjects and reference points reveal them selves through an impulsive, non-rationalized process. Formal qualities, being the primary focus and careful aesthetic decisions on space and composition work to communicate the pictorial and sculptural as intricately bound. A particular colour palette is used to elucidate aesthetic ideals – that of beauty and imperfection. Overall the intention is not to indoctrinate but rather intrigue, relying on the imagination of the viewer.
